Plagiarism

Cheating and submitting someone else’s work as one’s own is a crime and could result in a student being withdrawn and issued an F.   FLVS uses the company called turnitin.com to detect plagiarism.  Most colleges are using this service now.  When a student submits an assignment, it gets compared to what’s on the Internet and previous submissions from other students.  If turnitin.com detects a match, it sends me a report, which I must read before I can grade your submission.  That is why submissions with files may take up to 48 hours to grade.

For instance, the report from turnitin.com will tell me if the answer was cut and paste from ChatGPT, answers.yahoo.com, brainly.com, wikipedia.com, OpenStudy.com, answers.com, coursehero.com, quizlet.com, bing.com, or another student’s work, etc…

Make sure to put ideas in your own words.  If you cite, make sure to use quotations if it is a direct quote and have a citation page at the end.  On the first offense for plagiarism or cheating, you may resubmit for credit after you do an Academic Integrity lesson, and your parent must get involved.

On the second offense of cheating, you may resubmit for partial credit, you must again do an Academic Integrity lesson, and likewise, your parent must get involved again.  The student may get further investigation by the FLVS Academic Integrity Department.  Then the consequence gets much worse from there.

In the interest of transparency so that everyone knows what to expect, below is a copy of Academic Integrity: Matrix, which details what happens on the first offense of plagiarism, up to the third attempt, and repeated offense.   By the third plagiarism attempt, a student will get an Automatic Zero.  If the Academic Integrity Department determined that plagiarism had taken place after a course has been completed, completed course grade could be removed retroactively.  Furthermore, on repeated offenses, approved expulsion from FLVS will take place. Please let me know if you have questions as this is a most serious matter.
